Is the Stress Management Program at Your Company Stressful in and of Itself?

Some straightforward suggestions - as well as methods to share with others - for minimizing stress at work.

Stress is having a significant negative impact on American industry. The cost of sickness, absenteeism, lost productivity, accidents, blunders, burnout, high turnover, and rising health insurance premiums is estimated to be between $80 billion and $300 billion per year, depending on the source.

This is why it should come as no surprise that many businesses are actively combating the stress pandemic with an arsenal of anti-stress efforts of their own. It's possible that the solution lies in the fact that some organizations are just attempting too much. In an attempt to alleviate stress, they are instead contributing to it. For all of their good intentions, many stress programs are complex and time-consuming, necessitate a great deal of reading and recall, rely heavily on theory and provide little practical advice, or simply do not connect with employees on their level, or with the specific problems they are experiencing.


Remember that time, and patience, are two things that individuals who are stressed out most need. Because they are so busy, they do not have time to attend long-term stress seminars that take them away from the same duties that are causing them stress. They don't have the time to go through lengthy guidelines and processes in search of the few pearls of wisdom that are applicable to their particular scenario. Some stress management methods are designed to treat the symptoms of stress rather than the underlying causes. They have a short duration of action. Workers become disillusioned and pessimistic, feeling that nothing will work and that they will return to their old, expensive, and stressful habits.

As a result, what can managers and human resource professionals do to overcome these roadblocks to effective stress management and "reach" their workers with solutions that will connect, and stick? It is advisable to begin with straightforward, open, and specific suggestions for ways that employees can swiftly implement them into their lives - techniques that capture their attention and provide instant benefits. These are less obtrusive, require little or no time to implement, and get the user started on the correct road, with the proper mindset, from the beginning of the process. As an example, I've chosen the 10 workplace methods that I use in my books and seminars and that have been field-tested and received favorable responses from thousands of readers and seminar participants throughout the globe. Simply forward them to the appropriate person by email or interoffice message. Furthermore, I feel that they might have a huge positive impact on your staff as well.

One item at a time is recommended

Make a conscious effort to do so. Make a good job of it. Take pleasure in your accomplishment. Then go on to the next item on your list. Multitasking may be effective for computers, but humans have not yet mastered the skill of multitasking. An increasing amount of research indicates that attempting to do many tasks at the same time consumes more time overall than completing them in a sequential manner. It also requires a significant amount of mental energy, causing you to get fatigued more rapidly. In addition to thoughtless errors, bad work, and unpredictable performance, a lack of concentration may cause fatigue. The most frustrating aspect is having to start again. This is not a healthy way to live. Give whatever you're doing your whole and undivided attention. Take your time to ensure that everything is perfect. In the long term, you'll be more productive and less stressed as a result of this.

Projects with extended lead periods should be worked on incrementally

When you obtain an assignment with a "luxury" of time, don't waste it. Make at least a start on it as soon as possible, when your interest and comprehension of it are at their highest. Then devote a little amount of time to it on a daily basis to maintain momentum. In this manner, every thought you have about the project will be a good one, such as "I'm on the case, and I'm seeing it through." If you put it off, you will get progressively pessimistic. "Yikes, I haven't even begun yet!" will become your mantra. Over time, this may build up to a significant amount of stress. And a significant problem: as the deadline approaches, you've forgotten what you're supposed to be doing, and your excitement has been replaced with worry and fear. Get things underway as soon as possible. You'll do more in less time and with less stress if you don't stress yourself.

Don't allow harmful work stress to continue

If your task or project is hard to accomplish without tearing your hair out, performing a sloppy job, or having a near-stroke as a result, speak out as soon as possible rather than burying your feelings and being unable to execute the work effectively and professionally. Moreover, explain it in a constructive manner by suggesting various solutions, such as: you'll need extra time; you can complete part of the job inside the time frame; or you'll require additional assistance. If you're a decent, capable worker, your request should be met with respect and obedience on the part of others. It is not helpful to say nothing and let the situation eat away at your well-being, causing both you and your organization to perform below expectations.

Delegate

Stress is often brought on by an unwillingness to let go, a persistent desire to micromanage, and the worry that everything will come crashing down the minute you turn your back on someone or something. As a result, you get bogged down in time-consuming minutiae, others are stifled from participating and growing, and there is an unneeded amount of stress all around. Take a leap of faith and see what happens. Learn how to delegate effectively. Assign duties and offer others the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. You may dish it out gradually to acquire confidence and avoid mistakes, but you should start by freeing yourself of the oppressive minutia that is unnecessarily suffocating your life. Simply delegating tasks may result in a significant decrease in stress in a very short amount of time.

Participate as a team member

Working in a group is more productive - and less stressful - than working alone. Your career, your family, and your community all need you to be proactive. Pressure is reduced and everyone becomes more cooperative when labor and responsibilities are distributed evenly between them. We are not, despite the fact that we prefer to think of ourselves as whole packages. We rely on others to make up for what we don't have and to help us balance out our combined strengths and limitations. Allow yourself to let go of the need to assume full responsibility or to claim complete credit. Society is a collaborative endeavor, and achievement is most satisfying when everyone contributes to it.

Work on a variety of projects in a rotational fashion

For example, if you have three tasks due the next week, doing them in their entirety one after the other might make each project seem lengthy, drawn out, and exhausting to the audience watching. Instead, split your daily time into thirds and devote equal amounts of time to each of the three tasks. Taking a break from one project to work on another will help you make consistent progress on all of them at the same time. Similar to how a farmer rotates crops to keep the land rich and healthy, varying jobs will keep you more alert and inventive, allowing you to do the work more quickly and thoroughly while having more fun.

Do you have check-a-holic tendencies?

How much of your time do you spend unnecessarily double-checking your work? Check the weather forecast. Check the time on your phone. Take a look at the markets. Check your email to see if anything has arrived. Take a look at your hair. Check your voicemail for any messages. Check out the latest news. Make sure your cosmetics are in order. Before you go on, check to verify whether your wallet is still in your pocket. How much of your day are you wasting by doing something like this? There's a lot more to it than you may think. Take it easy. There is no danger of things falling apart when you are not looking. As a result, fight the temptation to get continuous, pointless, and tedious updates. Make use of the time to retain your concentration and complete additional tasks. When you have the temptation to double-check anything, just let it go and forget about it.

Don't worry about meeting deadlines. What do you think about starting lines?

We live in a culture that is preoccupied with when a project is completed, but we are all strangely lax about when a project should be started. And it may turn out to be the most important aspect of all. As a result, it is possible that numerous deadlines will be missed. Instead of obsessing over the date on which something is due, concentrate on getting it started. Create a "starting point." That is, a deadline by which it is critical to begin work on a project so that it is not completed in a hurried and sloppily constructed way. Keep to your startline and you will not only ensure an effective and unhurried performance, but you will also almost remove the need for a deadline and the tension that comes with it. Which "line" would you want to be assigned to? Get the ball rolling.

Make effective use of your gear shifter

Some jobs need you to abandon everything and attend to something else on a regular basis. This is known as multitasking. This may be a never-ending source of worry and frustration for the person involved in the situation. If you allow it to alternatively, and as impossible as it may seem today, you may train yourself to get used to it, and even like it! Preparing in advance for such interruptions allows you to take a clean break without feeling anxious, knowing that you'll return later to finish up any loose ends. Simply devote your complete attention to whatever you're doing at the time, and then let it go as soon as it becomes necessary. Quick transitioning is a talent, an ability that may be learned, mastered, and used to gain personal fulfillment.

Take a few deep breaths and stretch

This is especially true if you work at a desk or on a computer. A typical day at work should not be comparable to an eight-hour aircraft flight. Get up from your chair and stand every few minutes, stretching your arms and legs - even kneeling, bending from side to side, rotating your head, strolling about, and so on - to improve your circulation. Getting your blood flowing freely can help you think more clearly, relax your muscles and joints, and remove some of the tension you've been carrying around. Give your body a little tune-up every hour or so, for at least one or two minutes.

Maintain your sense of awareness of your surroundings

When you're under time constraints and pressure, it's easy to get agitated, panic, and lose your cool. Your degree of error increases, your level of carelessness increases, and your level of politeness decreases. Making matters worse is all that is being done. Maintaining your presence of mind under pressure is something you should practice. To remain cool and in control, take several slow, deep breaths and face the issue with confidence. When you make an effort to maintain your composure, you'll find that you can manage situations more effectively and even more swiftly. Hysteria achieves nothing and is counterproductive.
